Does iNet Guardian block images ?

We are often asked if iNet Guardian blocks images on a search ? We don’t block images and there are two good reasons why we don’t.

  • The first reason is, if we were to look at every possible image that could be returned in an image search then we would greatly effect the user experience. This is because we would need to check each individual image prior to it being returned to the user in the list of results. As you can imagine for the volume of images that get returned in a basic search, this would slow down the user experience to such an extent that the feature would soon be redundant as people would stop using it.

  • The second and main reason we don’t offer the blocking of images is that all of the main popular search engines have a “Safe Search” feature that can be enabled in a few clicks. The “Safe Search” feature is designed to block explicit content (not just images) however this still is not guaranteed to be 100% safe and accurate, nothing is. As Google state on their site

We enabled Safe Search and did a search for “Cow Girl”, an example of an innocent search for a child that could bring up inappropriate content. Google filtered most inappropriate images out, some still came through, as shown below. However, enabling Safe Search will eliminate most inappropriate content.

You can either enable safe search in the search engine your children use or use a safe search app/site.

To enable safe search in Google see (article applies to Android phone, tablet and TV’s) https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/510

For Bing https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4026414/bing-turn-safesearch-on-or-off

For DuckDuckGo https://duck.co/help/features/safe-search

For iOS devices https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201304 and look at Prevent Web Content

For other search engines just type in the search engine name followed by safe search  and you should find information on how to enable this.

You can use safe search engines aimed at children such as

and you can also do a search for Safe Search in the Apple App store or Android Google Play.

We have previously published a blog on how to make your childrens searches safer and more accurate by using appropriate syntax in the search, just click the link below.
